Applications of stainless steel sheets and plates

Stainless steel in sheet and plate form has become a proven and firmly established, highly sought-after material used for manufacturing a wide range of products for:

Commonly, inox plates or sheets are made of cold-rolled or hot-rolled alloy steels, which, unlike regular (not stainless) mild or galvanized steel, have good to very good chemical and corrosion resistance. Due to this property, stainless steel sheet fabrication is popular for a wide range of products and for the realization of various applications, such as:

What kind of stainless steel plates are available?

Stainless steel sheets are flat stainless steel products produced in a wide variety of thicknesses and dimensions and are also available as cut-to-length or cut-to-size products.

Typically, steel mills, steel service centres and stainless steel suppliers, distributors and stockists offer stainless steel sheet fabrication in standard sizes such as:

  • 1,000 x 2,000 mm
  • 1,250 x 2,500 mm
  • 1,500 x 3,000 mm
  • 2,000 x 4,000 mm

Custom stainless steel plates can also be produced in special widths, cut to length from coils or supplied as blanks according to specific requirements.

Stainless steel sheet sizes: standard and custom dimensions

The most standard dimensions of inox sheets are:

  • 2,500 x 1,250 mm

Stainless steel plates in the above shown dimensions are available regularly and can also be handled, transported, and processed fairly easily.

However, we are receiving more and more inquiries from our customers for the fabrication of stainless steel sheets with special thicknesses and dimensions – such as thicker hot-rolled stainless steel plates for instance. For these demands too, our great expertise and many years of experience enable us to source and surface treat such stainless steel sheet sizes as per request by the customer, also in lengths of up to 16,000 mm and widths of up to 4,000 mm, depending on the order quantity and surface finish, such as:

  • 5,000 x 1,500 mm
  • 6,000 x 1,500 mm
  • 6,000 x 2,000 mm
  • 10,000 x 2,000 mm
  • etc.

Are stainless steel sheets magnetic?

The magnetic properties of stainless steel sheets largely depend on the structure of the material and its chemical composition.

The most common AISI 304 and AISI 316/316L stainless steels are not magnetic because they belong to the group of austenitic steels. It should be noted, however, that even austenitic steel plates can exhibit magnetic properties to some extent after processing and certain technological processes.

In any case, magnetism does not affect the physical properties of the material, especially corrosion resistance. Inox sheets have excellent workability and are well suited for welding.
