
BURNISHING
Burnishing is a method of giving metals a dark colouring via oxidation, whereby the material is not sealed.
Burnishing forms a so-called "living surface", which is already uneven in the newly-formed state, and then proceeds to change over time, forming a natural patina. The surface is not immutable, but rather accumulates traces. Traces from the manufacture, and from usage, the surroundings, the environment.
The burnishing layer thickness is approx. 1 µm. The layers are largely bending and abrasion-resistant, and temperature resistant up to approx. 300 degrees Celsius. Because of the porosity of the burnishing layer, it only has slight corrosion protection, but this can be significantly improved via oiling or greasing.
