Anti-Slip Sheets: Why This Matters

In the field of slip-resistant or anti-slip surfaces, various types of surface treatments and designs are offered:

  • Cross-polished and crisscross-polished surfaces, created through at least two grinding processes. This includes products such as our CROSS R13;
  • Bead-blasted surfaces, for example our BEADS 10 product, where the sheets are blasted with corundum;
  • Pattern-rolled or embossed surfaces, such as 6WL structured sheets, tread plates, diamond plates, and others.

Cross-polished or crisscross-polished surfaces are used where either a high-quality design aesthetic or safety aspects – such as the anti-slip properties described above – are important.

If the customer only requires a visually appealing finish, cross-polished surfaces are usually produced with a finer abrasive.

To achieve higher slip resistance or certified slip resistance (e.g., R13), coarser abrasives are used on these cross-polished surfaces to create a rougher texture.

Thus, the applications of cross-polished surfaces can generally be divided into two groups, which may overlap in practice:

Design- and aesthetics-driven applications, including:

  • Façade construction
  • Wall cladding
  • Ceiling elements
  • Elevator and escalator cladding (walls and ceilings)
  • Retail fit-outs
  • Exhibition stand construction
  • Yacht and shipbuilding
  • Sanitary and wellness areas
  • Equipment and apparatus construction
  • And many more

Function- and safety-driven applications, including:

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Plant engineering
  • Elevator and escalator construction (tread surfaces)
  • Stair construction (steps and treads)
  • Vehicle construction
  • Work platforms
  • Cold storage construction
  • Wet and outdoor areas (flooring)
  • Shipbuilding (tread surfaces)
  • And many more

As mentioned, the requirements for design and function often overlap.

When combined with stainless steel, cross-polished surfaces offer a wide range of applications, providing high quality in terms of aesthetics, functionality, durability, mechanical and chemical resistance, and longevity.

Cross-Polished Stainless Steel Sheets

A particularly interesting product from our range of polished surfaces is stainless steel sheet that undergoes a double grinding process, both longitudinally and transversely.

These treated surfaces, known as cross-polished or crisscross-polished, are also referred to in English as Criss-Cross Polish.

What Is Cross-Polishing?

Cross-polishing refers to the process in which the material—typically stainless steel sheets—is passed through a grinding machine at least twice.

  • The first step usually involves longitudinal grinding, parallel to the length of the sheet.
  • In the second step, the sheet is rotated at a specific angle, often 90°, though this can vary depending on the desired design.

Advantages of Cross-Polishing?

Cross-polished surfaces offer several notable benefits:

  • Elegant, high-quality appearance, with stainless steel creating captivating reflections and light effects.
  • Increased resistance to damage, as small scratches or marks are less visible.
  • Long service life, as the robust surface requires less frequent repair or replacement.
  • Slip-resistant properties, depending on the grit and method used, enhancing safety in workplaces and public areas.

mirrorINOX: Expertise with Cross-Polished Surfaces

Cross-polished and similarly treated surfaces are classified into different slip-resistance categories through certification.

Various institutions, both domestic and international, test slip properties and assign a rating (R10, R11, R12, R13).

mirrorINOX is a certified manufacturer of anti-slip stainless steel sheets. We offer these products in a wide variety of materials (AISI 430, AISI 304, AISI 316L, AISI 318LN, and more). Purely decorative finishes are also available in aluminum, as well as in combination with coatings and colors (PVD/TiN or nanoINOX® AFP/ETC) for versatile applications.
