What is 2R stainless steel and what makes this finish special?
2R stainless steel is a specific finish for cold-rolled sheet that acquires its characteristic reflective surface through bright annealing. This finish is used primarily for grades 1.4301 and 1.4404, as it offers an ideal combination of aesthetics and functional smoothness. At its Cleebronn facility, mirrorINOX uses 2R stainless steel as a high-quality base material for further finishing processes. Whether for architectural accents or sterile environments in the pharmaceutical industry, we process this material into customized solutions for international B2B customers, combining technical expertise with state-of-the-art equipment.
What is 2R stainless steel? – Definition and basics
Stainless steel 2R is a surface finish for cold-rolled stainless steel defined in accordance with DIN EN 10088-2. Its key characteristic is the final heat-treatment stage: after cold rolling, the sheets are annealed in a controlled protective atmosphere. This process prevents surface oxidation, eliminating the need for final pickling. The result is a smooth, bright and metallically clean surface. Compared with the matt 2B finish, 2R offers significantly higher reflectivity, although this may vary between manufacturers, as the standards do not specify fixed gloss levels.
We manufacture and supply stainless steel solutions in this mill finish, primarily in grades 1.4301 and 1.4404 and in material thicknesses up to 3.0 mm. As the visual quality of the mill finish is often subject to variation, we frequently use 2R sheet as the base material. We further refine these surfaces by mechanical polishing to achieve defined gloss levels such as Super Mirror No. 8 or Perfect Mirror No. 10®. This allows us to compensate for material-specific mill tolerances and guarantee the reproducibility essential for large-scale architectural and yacht-building projects.
Designations and Synonyms – Relevant Standards and Names
DIN EN 10088-2: European finish designation 2R
In the European standard, this finish is designated “2R”. The number “2” denotes the cold-rolling process, while the “R” indicates bright annealing (reflective). This condition was formerly often referred to as “IIID”, a designation still occasionally found in older technical drawings or inventory lists. When sourcing materials, we adhere strictly to the current DIN EN 10088-2 to ensure compliance for industrial applications.
AISI and ASTM: The designation “BA” (Bright Annealed)
In English-speaking countries and in international trade, the designation “BA” for “Bright Annealed” is commonly used. It corresponds exactly to the European 2R finish. When customers require specifications to American standards, we supply 2R stainless steel that fully meets the requirements for BA finishes. International comparability is particularly important in shipbuilding and for global supply chains, where mirrorINOX operates as a certified partner.
Common Terms: Bright-Annealed and Bright-Finished
In trade and industrial usage, the terms “bright annealed” or “bright-finish annealed” are frequently used. They describe the physical condition of the surface after annealing in a protective atmosphere. Although these terms are not precisely defined in technical standards, buyers and technicians understand them to mean reflective sheet with low surface roughness. We use these terms in our consultations to align our customers’ visual expectations with the technical capabilities of stainless steel mills.
Chemical Composition – Composition of the Base Brazing Alloys
The properties of 2R stainless steel depend largely on the chemical composition of the grades used. We primarily process grades 1.4301 and 1.4404 with the following alloying elements:
- Chromium (Cr): 17.5%–19.5% (essential for corrosion resistance)
- Nickel (Ni): 8.0%–10.5% (stabilizes the austenitic microstructure)
- Molybdenum (Mo): 2.0%–2.5% (only in 1.4404 to increase chloride resistance)
- Manganese (Mn): maximum 2.0% (improves formability)
- Carbon (C): maximum 0.07% (or 0.03% for L grades to prevent intergranular corrosion)
- Silicon (Si): maximum 1.0% (used for deoxidation during melting)
- Phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S): in minimal amounts to optimize purity
Properties of 2R stainless steel
Mechanical properties
In the cold-rolled condition, 2R stainless steel offers high tensile strength and good yield strength. Cold rolling causes a certain degree of work hardening, which is partially reduced by subsequent bright annealing to ensure good formability. We supply sheets that are ideally suited to bending, press braking and deep drawing. This is particularly relevant for enclosure manufacturing and decorative formed parts, where the bright surface must be retained during forming.
Physical properties
The material has a density of approx. 7.9 kg/dm³. Its thermal conductivity is lower than that of unalloyed steels, while its coefficient of thermal expansion is higher. A key characteristic of the 2R finish is its low emissivity due to its high reflectivity. We use this property in projects where thermal radiation needs to be reflected or low heat emission from the surface is required, for example in commercial kitchen equipment.
Corrosion resistance
The corrosion resistance of 2R stainless steel is generally higher than that of ground or pickled finishes due to its smooth surface. As the surface has no grinding grooves, it offers fewer sites for corrosive media to attack. Grade 1.4301 with a 2R finish is resistant to water and weak acids, while the molybdenum content of grade 1.4404 provides excellent resistance to chlorides and pitting corrosion. For marine applications or the chemical industry, we generally recommend the higher-alloy grade 1.4404.
Magnetism
As a rule, the austenitic grades 1.4301 and 1.4404 that we process are non-magnetic in the annealed condition. However, cold forming during the rolling process can produce a small proportion of strain-induced martensite, resulting in slight residual magnetism. This is irrelevant for most shopfitting or architectural applications. If completely non-magnetic properties are required for medical or scientific equipment, we will be happy to advise you on specific custom solutions and testing methods.
Applications and industries
- Architecture and façade construction: Used for decorative panels, ceiling cladding or design elements due to its reflective appearance.
- Yacht and shipbuilding: Used for fittings, railings and interiors, with the smooth surface reducing cleaning requirements in salt-laden air.
- Food industry and catering: Ideal for work surfaces, containers and cladding, as the low surface roughness prevents residues from adhering.
- Pharmaceuticals and medical technology: Used in cleanrooms and for sterile containers where maximum hygiene and ease of disinfection are required.
- Mechanical and equipment engineering: Used for reflectors, covers or in systems requiring chemically resistant, smooth surfaces.
- Tank and silo construction: The functional smoothness improves material flow and enables residue-free emptying of storage units.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 2R and 2B stainless steel finishes?
2B stainless steel is cold-rolled, heat-treated, pickled and lightly skin-passed, resulting in a satin-matt, slightly reflective grey surface. By contrast, 2R stainless steel is bright-annealed under a protective atmosphere after cold rolling. This process prevents oxidation, eliminating the need for pickling and producing a bright, highly reflective mill finish. While the 2B finish is primarily used as a versatile base material for functional components and mechanical finishing processes, 2R is preferred when high initial reflectivity and low surface roughness are required directly from the mill.
Where can I buy finished 2R stainless steel in Germany?
Finished stainless steel surfaces based on high-quality 2R material are available directly from mirrorINOX. We supply customers throughout Germany and worldwide with tailored solutions. As a specialist in surface finishing, we offer finished sheets and components produced using polishing, PVD/TiN coating, nanoINOX® or mechanical processes. We stock base materials in common grades such as 1.4301 and 1.4404 to ensure fast finishing, high availability and short lead times.
Is 2R stainless steel also available in thicknesses greater than 3 mm?
Ex works, 2R stainless steel is generally only produced in thicknesses up to a maximum of 3.0 mm. For applications requiring thicker plate with a comparable or superior appearance, mirrorINOX offers a solution: We polish hot-rolled or cold-rolled material in thicknesses currently up to 30 mm to a mirror finish.
